The Al Reem menu
41 dishes across seven categories, and 13 drinks across two. Everything is halal. Every drink is a mocktail. Prices run from €2.50 for pita bread to €28.50 for chargrilled beef skewers.
Cold Mezze— 11 dishes, €8.75 to €12.80

Mezze are small dishes brought out together and shared. They are not starters in the European sense — you do not finish them before the main arrives, you keep eating them through the meal. Cold mezze are the dips and the salads: hummus and moutabbal to scoop with bread, tabbouleh and fattouch to cut the richness, labneh and muhammara to spread.
Seven of the 11 cold mezze are vegan.

Words on this list
Falafel is chickpeas ground raw with parsley, coriander, onion and garlic, shaped and fried. Freekeh is wheat harvested while it is still green and then roasted, which gives it a smoky flavour nothing else on the menu has; here it goes into a soup. Rkakat are thin pastry rolls, fried — at Al Reem filled with feta and akkawi cheese, mint, nigella seeds and thyme. Akkawi is a white brined cheese that softens rather than melts. Kallaj is another thin pastry, here folded around spinach with sun-dried tomato, shallots and sumac.

Shish taouk is chicken marinated in yogurt, garlic, vinegar and thyme, then grilled on skewers. How to order
Eat the way this food is built to be eaten. Cold mezze first, in the middle of the table, three or four dishes between two people. Then something warm — falafel, halloumi, soup. Then one main dish each, or one large main between two if you have ordered well. Then knafeh.
If you are eating alone or eating quickly, a Mediterranean pita at €11.50 to €13.50 is a whole meal on one plate.
